NHS London has a responsibility for commissioning education for the NHS in London; this includes pre-registration and continuing personal and professional development, Nursing, Midwifery and Allied Health Professional education as well as undergraduate and postgraduate Medical and Dental education.
Education is commissioned using the Multi-Professional Education and Training Levy which is managed by the Strategic Health Authority on behalf of London’s NHS and the Department of Health.
To facilitate NHS London's ability to commission non-medical education services, and ensure value for money, with appropriate stakeholders a set of standard contracts and a contract performance management system has been implemented.
NHS London wishes to commission an innovative midwifery programme with an enhanced academic content which explores and develops new models of delivery of education in this field. The programme should demonstrate a focus on building research capability and capacity, which will embrace the spirit of developing the clinically academic midwife. This midwife will be a confident autonomous practitioner who will be able to demonstrate research capability.
The successful Education provider(s) will be required to enter into contractual arrangement(s) with NHS London through a London Education Contract (LEC) to provide this innovative programme and to enter a placement agreement with Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust for provision of clinical placement for students on the programme.
The programme of education will provide midwives who, on completion, have the ability to work in an academic healthcare environment, demonstrating well developed research capability and capacity skills.
